Located on a site surrounded by boxy non-descript buildings wrapped in endlessly repeating facade patterns that optimize economy and function. Tasked with designing a gift to the city of Chicago we sought to find a nicer  way of wrapping it.

The gift consists of a triangular prism building adjoined  to 555 W Madison  (The extension) and and a similar but opposing triangular prism building across the street (The addition).

We proceeded to wrap the gift using a regular, orthogonal grid along Madison following the contextual rhythm along the sides of both prisms, when the grid encountered the tapered face of the prism it naturally shifted direction creating an interesting and unexpected pattern. It is this unexpected pattern that will serve as the basis for the spatial configuration of both buildings.

This form of wrapping a gift that reacts to the geometry onto which it is wrapped allows us to  conciliate the existing with the new  that feels both familiar and exciting.
